Doctor's Appointments, Ultrasound, and a Prenatal Massage!

This has been a busy week for this VERY PREGNANT Mama! Monday, I had my last 4 week (or 5 week the way I have been scheduling) doctor's appointment and we are now on the two week schedule! Just another milestone that reminds me just how close we really are to two new residents in our home!

Thanks to the kindness of a beautiful lady and my friend since supper club at Chip's and my former church, Susan McSwain, I was able to once again go on my appointments sans Elijah. I don't mind taking him to my actual doctor's appointments but I was told that children were discouraged from the ultraound (yeah that's a whole other topic) and it really is too long for Elijah to be expected to sit still. He loves his time with Miss Susan so it was a fun morning for them both! ;) And I really appreciate this awesome lady being so willing to help our family!

The first stop Monday morning (at 29 weeks 3 Days) was for my growth ultrasound. Based on how beautifully that turned out, I believe I will be declining further ultraounds....though I did make my next appointment in four weeks just in case. I plan to cancel that once we get some other logistics worked out hopefully this week.  Rory continues to be in perfect birth position, head down, face down. He is in the 80th percentile for growth and weights 3 pounds 9 ounces. Patrick was transverse at this appointment though I know he flips to breech. (I was assured that he would likely be in head down position for birth) Patrick is in the 76th percentile and weights 3 pounds 8 ounces. Ironically my boys weight almost exactly the same as my husband's twin sisters did when they were born at 31 weeks. Just a fun fact to sort of put size into perspective. The ultrasound tech and radiologist were thrilled with the boys growth and said everything looks perfect and that the size should start to taper off in a few weeks so I am THINKING that MAYBE the boys won't be as big as their big brother who tipped the scales at 8 pounds 6 ounces born at 39 weeks).

After I finished with the ultrasound I made my way up to see Dr. Espana. Once again, I was told that my weight gain is awesome and that he really had nothing to tell me because everything looks perfect. My fundal height (from pubic bone to top of uterus) is measuring at 33 weeks (singleton) which is great for twins, no swelling and he just seemed super happy with my healthy twin pregnancy! Really, there is nothing to report from the doctor visit which is great, though I spend so much time actually getting down there that it would be nice if we had more to do on these visits. Dr. Espana is always happy to answer questions and talk about anything I want to chat about but I really had no concerns myself  this visit so it was pretty much in and out. His only advice was to up my water intake even more to help Patrick have plenty of room to turn. My fluid levels are great but we just want to give him every bit of help we can in getting into position!

I would like to ask for prayers. Chip and I are discussing making some changes to our birth plan and regarding our care. Nothing I can share at the moment but I am very excited about some changes that may be coming and we just asked that God's will be done on this.  More on this as as our plan evolves!

Then Tuesday, I had a very special treat! Elijah's Granddad (Chip's Dad) came over to spend an hour or so with Elijah so I could indulge! My incredible Doula (who is also a much loved midwife!) Shannon Stellhorn, shared that she had a friend/Doula that was offered prenatal massages out of Shannon's home! Casey Risinger (A blessed Path Doula) gave me the most incredible, awesome massage on Tuesday! Oh how I needed that! My body is getting very tired from the bulbous baby bump that is sticking (literally) straight out in front of me.  I left my massage feeling so relaxed, rejuvenated and detoxed!

It was quite an awesome and busy week! The ultraound pictures that we got were not super clear cosmetically but I will share a few of my favorites!

This shows that my babies are head to foot.  I can't help but worry that little Patrick might be getting kicked in the head by his brother.

Rory, my deep thinker. :)

I can't resist the cute foot pictures. We found out that Patrick actually has his second toe longer than his big toe....just like his Daddy!!!

My sweet Patrick :)

25 Weeks Pregnant.....Rory & Patrick Update.......Nesting

15 weeks to go until my estimated due date. This pregnancy continues to fly by and I am feeling great, especially when I get enough sleep, which honestly is about 3-4 nights a week.  I had a doctor's appointment and growth ultrasound this week.  I have mixed feelings about the growth ultrasounds and although I don't mind them so much right now, I am thinking that as we get nearer to my due date, I will start declining them after the next one (in about five weeks).

First, the babies!

Rory: Rory is no longer in the 93rd percentile which thrills me, my midwife/doula, my doctor and pretty much everyone involved.  Although I am not "scared" of big babies, I know that it will make this labor and birth much easier if my babies are closer to average size.  As a result I have cut way back on carbs which hasn't been that tough because my appetite is not quite as ravenous as it has been.  I'm not sure if my dietary choices have been part of the reason for the slight slow down in growth or if it is just the natural course of things as twins' growth slows a lot sooner than singletons.  At any rate, previously almost two weeks ahead in growth, Rory measured at 26 weeks 2 days when we were 24 weeks 6 days. His aproximinat weight (which I know can be way off with ultrasounds) is 1 lb 14 oz.  Rory is also head down right now as he has been for a while. We pray that he stays in this position!

Our Baby A's profile

I'm already in love with that sweet face(Rory). Still thinking he looks like his big brother!

Rory's profile.

Patrick: Patrick's growth has slowed down as well. Previously in the 92nd percentile, he is now in the 77th! Dr. Espana and I agreed that we would love to see them around the 60th percentile.  I want my boys to stay healthy and would also like them to have a nice easy birth. Patrick also measured almost two weeks ahead at our last visit five weeks ago and this week at 24 weeks 6 days, he measured at 25 weeks 5 days! His approximate weight matches his brother's at 1 lb 14oz. We did find Patrick is in breech position and are asking MAJOR PRAYERS for him to turn to head down and stay that way by my next appointment.  Not only is this the ideal position for babies to be in for birth, it is very uncomfortable having him breech because his head gets wedged under my ribs and really hurts. I do believe that the day after my appointment he flipped. It just felt like he was head down and I did a quick heart beat check with my fetal doppler and found his heart beat much lower (previously it has been up by my ribs and this time it was near my belly button which would make sense for head down because Rory sort of takes up most of the space down low.  My doctor doesn't seem too concerned about the breech factor, convinced that this baby will turn with no problem. And if he doesn't, he has agreed to a breech birth for our Baby B.

Sort of a neat shot of both babies

Mama Update:  I had an awesome doctor appointment after the morning ultrasounds. I have been working on my birth plan and had a list of questions to ask my doctor........he answered all the questions exactly as I hoped! I was thrilled that he agreed to a vaginal breech birth if necessary and is open to the possibility of a water birth even in the hospital. I was able to let go of so many worries following my conversation with Dr. Espana, my "midhusband" as I have heard him referred to more than once in the natural birth community.  At the conclusion of this appointment I have all of my main points bulleted for my birth plans and just have to organize them and type them up! My weight continues to be increasing at a comfortable pace for my doctor, though I must admit I would like it to slow a little. I have gained about 25 pounds and my doctor believes I am on track to gain 40 lbs which is the twin recommended minimum. My blood pressure, which is always low, was at an all time low of 82/54........low enough for them to notice and comment but frankly I would rather have it super low and be at a lower risk of pre-eclampsia which is common for multiples pregnancy.  Dr. Espana told me whatever I am doing, keep doing it! So I left that doctor's office feeling pretty great about  this pregnancy!

I am determined to get both these babies in head down position if I can because although I have the green light to deliver breech, it is not the ideal.  Right now I am committed to my exercises which include the following:

Pelvic Tilts - 40 reps 3-4 times  a day
Squats - 20 reps 3-4 times a day and then when I need to pick something up off the floor
Inversions (basically hanging upside down off the couch) 3 seconds one time a day
Walking - 25 minutes once a day then most days I get a second 10-15 min walk in
Taylor Sitting - (formerly known as Indian Style) - throughout the day
Side Lying Release - basically laying on my side with my hips stacked.  Leaning back with your feet up is not good for baby positioning so when I need to relax, this is the position I opt for!

I managed to get some 25 weeks pictures though honestly, I'm not super thrilled with how these turned out. I am still learning the ins and outs of my DSLR camera and having a little trouble with lighting and focus. But here is what we have!

25 Weeks! Look at that belly!

Just love feeling these little ones move so much!

Sweet Baby Belly,

My big boy growing right along with my belly!

This week we were supposed to be Papaya but that is a really sugary fruit (and not in season) so I opted to use squash to represent the size of my babies! Their growth will slow down quite a bit now so we may night do fruit/veggie comparisons every update.

Then and now. This belly has just POPPED OUT!
Nesting.....I have been dying to get things ready for these babies! We haven't been able to do much due to some financial restrictions (issues with dogs, house cars etc keep popping up, grrrrr).  I am so ready to just have all this done and we have really barely begun.  Chip and I received some gifts for our anniversary and decided to get a few home  details taken care of that needed tending too as well as get Elijah a set of shelves for his new playroom (in progress), formerly known as the dining room.  I was also able to get our guest room (which will become Elijah's bedroom over the next month or so) cleaned out with the help of my mother in law.  This was a big undertaking that took about two hours with two of us working at it and I am so happy to have it done! Now all Elijah's former baby stuff is being stored there and it will be used as a guest room for the last time this coming week.  I am hoping we can get it painted and start getting Elijah moved over and adjusted after that.  Then we can get going on the nursery.  I already have the nursery furniture all picked out at Target!  I am very excited to have these new shelves and have already moved toys over to the dining room.  There are a few things we will leave in the living because I do want Elijah to know we want him in there with us but I think it is nice for him to have a playroom as well, a place to keep his toys.  We found a great set of shelves at Home Depot and Elijah really enjoyed helping his Daddy put them together!

Such a little helper!

High Five!

Elijah is so interested in helping. I just love it!

It has been a great couple of weeks! We have some busy weeks coming up. Papa John and Mimi are coming for a visit next weekend and then the following weekend (which marks the beginning of the third trimester!) Elijah and I will take our last trip to San Antonio before the babies come!

20 Week 3 Day Ultrasound, Nutritionist and Doctor Appointment

Yesterday, Chip's mom came over and stayed with Elijah and Chip took the day off to come with me to several pregnancy appointments I had in the Med Center. The first was our ultrasound.We had such a great experience at the maternal/fetal center at TCH Woman's Pavillion. They specialize in multiples (twins, etc) and did an incredibly thorough ultrasound, taking about an hour per baby. What we discovered was that everything about the babies looks incredible. All their organs were perfect, they were beautifully formed and healthy! They are currently both measuring in the 92-93rd percentile.  Because of this, I was told I would have my one hour glucose test two months early. Sometimes Gestational Diabetes can cause babies to be bigger. Elijah always measured ahead so I am pretty sure it will turn out to be just that I have big babies, but I am waiting to find out the results today.  Because the twins are so large, I will be having a growth scan every 4 weeks.  This makes me a little nervous because I know sometimes doctors will push c-sections or induction based on size and that it is very possible to naturally birth big babies! But I also know that because I am TWIN VBAC my options are limited and I do believe my doctor is my best chance at a natural birth for these babies and thank heavens I have the guidance of my fabulous doula/midwife to advise me throughout. My doctor also said, cut back more on carbs to keep these babies within a good size range! So I really am buckling down like I should have been this whole time!  They also found a cyst on one of my ovaries. They said it is nothing to worry about now and that it should get smaller but they want to keep an eye on it.

One interesting things that we found out, baby A and B have switched! They determine who is who whoever is closer to the cervix and therefore will be born first. Well since our 16 week ultrasound, Rory has moved down a bit and is now Baby A. They said at this point they will still where they are as far as position to the cervix but now Rory is expected to be our next born and Patrick our 3rd!

The ultrasound was really a great experience though. And the tech got a couple of awesome 3D images. I think Rory looks like Elijah. :) I had a 3D ultrasoud with Elijah at 31 weeks but I think that Rory (even this early) is really starting to favor Elijah. Honestly I have thought that with other ultrasounds on the profile shots. It will be fun to see if I am right!

After we finished with the ultrasound, we saw the nutritionist. I was surprised to find out that my weight is actually on the low side of good. I should have gained 20-30 pounds by now with twins and I have gained 20. I knew my weight was okay but really thought I was somewhere in the middle. We talked about the difference supplements I am taking and she helped me space them out a little better so they would be more effective. I also shared my blackout incidents and she said it sounds like blood sugar issues. ( I am really anxious to get this glucose test back now!). We also discovered that I might be overdoing it o the vitamin D so I will be switching prenatal vitamins after I finish these and find a comparable (natural) one with lower amounts of D. I really liked the nutritionist and am excited to have her as a resource. She gave me her email and said I could contact her with questions. She liked my diet plan and said I seem to be on a good track!

After a lunch break, we went to my OB's office, I drank the nasty glucose then saw my doctor. He confirmed that he was a little concerned at the size of the babies and wanted me to back off of carbs. Honestly I try to focus most of my calories on protein and calcium but lately, I've felt extra stressed and emotional and have reached for convenience foods (carbs!) more often than I had planned. So it is really time get serious! I am determined to have a beautiful natural birth and I need to do everything in my power to make that happen! I finally started my yoga video today. Elijah did not cooperate with doing it after the walk so I did it after Gymboree when he was taking a nap but I was too winded from our outing to get through much of it so I will try again tomorrow and I will start on my stretches and squats tonight. I know that there is so much I can do to increase my chances of success and I do some of them but I am going to start doing them all! Chip has often commented that I can do anything, that I am determined and whenever I set my mind to something, I do it! Yesterday gave me that determination again. I am Mama. Hear me roar!

UPDATE: I just got an email from the nurse at my OB's office and my one hour glucose test came back normal. So just big babies! No more carbs for Mama. :)

16 Months Old.....16 Weeks Pregnant........And A New Car!

It has been a banner weekend for the Parish family! Elijah turned 16 months old. Yes, that happened on Monday but my insomnia has been kicking my butt and I have not gotten around tow writing his update until this weekend. I turned 16 weeks pregnant on Friday and then Saturday, we found out our babies' genders! I love knowing who is growing inside of me now and being able to call them by their names. But sorry folks, you have to wait until next weekend after we announce it at our reveal party. After the ultrasound, my dad and I did a little shopping. Was it for baby stuff? Yes, well sort of. Once my parents found out we were having twins and therefore on the market for a minivan, they decided that would be their gift to us! Needless to say we were floored, speechless and overwhelmed....and yes, we graciously accept! So Saturday, we turned in the Kia Sorrento for a brand new Honda Odyssey! As I said, it was a busy weekend!
16 Months Old
My little boy turned sixteen months old this week! My house is full if sweet little giggles and fast little steps running around on the wood floors. Elijah is a joyful, loving, gentle and affectionate toddler. Oh he is such a sweet boy. Don't get me wrong. He has his moments. He IS a toddler after all. (Though when I look at him I still see my baby.) But when he gets upset or has a little fit, he really moves past it very quickly. His verbal skills are moving slowly forward. So far his words are

Go = ga!
Bye Bye = ba! ba!
Banana = nanana
Mama - Mama
Dad = da
baby = ba
uh oh = uh oh
ball = ba
duck = du

I know there are some others he says less consistently that I am not thing of.

There are several words that he says that sound alike but it seems pretty apparent that he means different things. We are a little baffled because his comprehension is WAY above 16 months. He follows directions to the tee and he can even follow commands before you realize he knew those particular words. The other day, he found a penny and I said "let's go put that in your piggy bank" and he ran to his room and stood by his piggy bank. We are exploring different avenues of speech issues. I have set up a hearing test in a couple of weeks and am working on arranging a call with my aunt who is a speech pathologist. Odds are, he is totally normal and just a late talker but I am of the school of thought that early intervention is best if there is a matter that needs attention. I can definitely see progress in his verbal skills. He repeats a lot of what he hears, but he just seems to repeat it a little off. Most of his vowels are "a" and he doesn't seem to be able to put the ends on most words. The exceptions seem to be banana and uh oh. I just want to make sure that my sweet boy lives up to his big potential. So lots of updates on that in the upcoming weeks as we explore Elijah's learning style needs.

Elijah now has "chores". Yes, my 16 month old does chores. It is really just stuff he likes to help us do but he does it every day so I have come to think of it as his first chores. He helps his daddy feed the dogs. He dumps the food in the bowl and puts the food away. Keep in mind we have a big bloodhound as well as blue healer that eats her weight. So our food container is quite large. He loves to push it back into the pantry and close the door. He also continues to help me empty the dishwasher just about every day. As soon as he hears me open the dishwasher door, he comes running. And he really is helpful because it is not comfortable for me to keep bending over. He has started doing this on his own to be a "helper". I was surprised the other day as I stepped out of the shower and saw him standing there handing me my bathroom which I normally put on the floor right outside the shower. Since then, he has been doing that consistently. He continues to love to share, especially at Gymboree where there are lots of balls and bean bags to go around.

Elijah is definitely in his "separation anxiety" faze. Leaving him in the nursery at church during choir rehearsal is so hard! I go several minute early so I can sit with him for a bit but inevitably when it is time for me to go, there are tears. It seems that once he calms down (which according to the ladies in the nursery doesn't take long) he has a great time. He does love to be held so usually, when I come down to get him he is sitting on one of the caregivers laps. Fortunately, Chip is the one that drops him off on Sundays so I only have to see that sad little face once a week. I have to say, though, that the best part of my week are those times when I go get him from the nursery and see his face light up when he sees me. Makes my heart soar.

Some of his favorite things are Elmo, black bean burgers, homemade smoothies, ducks, dogs and music. He still loves to play outside and as the weather cools we will begin to spend more and more time outdoors.  I am trying to plan a comfy little area set up for myself and the babies to relax comfortably outside while Elijah plays so he can get lots of outdoor time and the twins will be content as well. A recipe for perfect Houston winter afternoons.

Our boy still loves to be worn. (We were on our way to a barbeque. Chip doesn't normally walk around the neighborhood with a case of beer)

Some silly time with Daddy.

We are getting our money's worth out of his exersauces. He likes to climb into it on his own now.

A little dinner out with Mama and Daddy

Although I can't wear him for as long as I used to, I still love to wear my boy.

Looking quite dapper in his tie!

16 Weeks Pregnant
This week has been kind of nuts. My insomnia is back with a vengeance, the homeopathic remedy I was using no longer works. So my doula has recommend some others for me to try which I will be picking up this week. I have also started to feel some mild braxton hicks contractions! This freaked me out a little and I bumped up my doctor's appointment to Tuesday (over a week early) because I just wanted to be sure that everything was on the up and up. It was. Babies look great, no signs of any dilation and all three of us are the picture of health. Dr. Espana is extremely pleased with my modest weight gain. (Modest? ) Apparently 13 pounds is good for 16 weeks pregnant with twins, especially since I never really suffered from morning sickness. Still, I know that I can be eating better, fewer carbs. It has been tough being so exhausted because when I am tired, that is what I reach for.....carbs. They are easy and comforting. But I need to be more diligent. I have a goal, twin VBAC...natural birth. And that goal will be achieved only by me doing my very best throughout this pregnancy. And even though my weight is "good" now, we all know that it can creep up on you, especially in pregnancy!
Now about those contractions. With Elijah, I had major Braxton Hicks.....like I could not walk and working in a giant convention hotel like the Westin Galleria like I did at the time, that was pretty rough. But they didn't start until somewhere around 33 weeks. Granted they knocked me on my butt and these were extremely mild but still, I never expected to have Braxton Hicks this early. I read that women actually start to get them in the their first trimester but can't feel them and I have read that twin Mama's can feel them throughout most of their pregnancy sometimes. I guess I am one of those Mama's. Haha.

I am also starting to feel more and more movement. It is still very small and inconsistent motions but I remember thinking Elijah's movement felt like a sea creature in my belly and that is exactly what this has been feeling like lately, just very slight. I expect over the next couple of weeks, those movements will continue to grow along with my tummy!
16 weeks - avocados from crown to rump! (Just picture little arms and legs on the avocados and that is my babies!)

Happy Mama at 16 weeks!

Pregnant belly....getting more obvious by the week.

My favorite photo companion...and first baby bump!

Now and Then. The twins and Elijah.

We also had our gender reveal ultrasound this weekend. We use a place called  Inside Story and they really give you an awesome experience. We used them for our gender ultrasound with Elijah as well as a 3D we chose to do around 32 weeks. It was really neat being back there, brought back a lot of memories from my pregnancy with Elijah. I loved having Elijah with us for this process and he was very intrigued by the images of his siblings on the big screen. He is going to be such an amazing big brother. I like doing our gender ultrasounds early because I really think it helps me bond with my babies. I get to call them by  their name and really start planning things like the nursery. It also makes daydreaming about my little ones more fun! The outcome of healthy babies is what is more important of course! But it is pretty great that we get to find out who the new members of our family are so early!

Here are a few shots from the ultrasound but sorry, guys, no giveaways. ;) It has only been one day and it is hard keeping this secret!

Elijah was wondering what were they doing to his Mama.

Bye bye babies.
A New Minivan
As soon as Chip and I found out we were pregnant with twins, I began to survey by car situation. I love my Kia Sorrento. Its a great car! Very comfy. It has served me well these last three years. It was the car we bought when we were trying to start a family. We bought that car for Elijah before there was an Elijah. But there is no way three car seats will fit comfortably. And because we enjoy visiting family, it would be nice to have a vehicle that could accommodate a lot of people. With no third row seating, the Kia fits five. So Chip and I began to discuss the possibility of buying a used minivian. With two new babies on the way, we didn't want to add a car payment to our list of bills. We paid off the Kia shortly after Elijah was born and I stopped working and a car payment would just not fit into our budget right now. So we began looking at gently used vans. My parents are pretty shrewd consumers and my dad knows a ton about cars. I remember him helping my grandfather with the purchase of his Chrysler Town and Country in  1996. He has just been diagnosed with lung cancer and wanted to make sure my grandmother was left with a reliable vehicle. That car is still in commission. My grandmother no longer drives but my aunt is now in possession of the Town and Country and drives it regularly. So we definitely wanted my parents input knowing nothing about vans ourselves.

What began as advice turned into an awesome gift for our quickly growing family. Chip and I were beside ourselves when we were offered a brand new mini van by my parents! We have said thank you several times but that seems so insufficient. They had the safety of our family in mind and let me tell you, our new Honda Odyssey is the safest one out there! Our insurance is actually going DOWN with this awesome new car! We chose the 2014 Honda Odyssey EX-L with navigation. And so yesterday, my dad and I went car shopping! I had such a great time visiting with him during our day. It was a fun and rare father/daughter excursion, due to a demanding work schedule, and a really fun day! We enjoyed texting back and forth with my mom about the neat features we were discovering (she already knew about most of them) and how our day was going. I was sending Chip progress reports and photos as he was having a father/son day with Elijah. And at the end of the day, I traded in the keys for my Kia Sorrento for a push button ignition of my new aweomse minivan!
My last moments with our first family car
Moving on to bigger and better things!
My new car all cozy in the driveway. It will be garage kept but when I got home I noticed our sago palm was growing over where the garage entrance is. That coupled with exhaustion, nighttime and the fact that I have never been a garage parker, I played it safe and let her stay in the driveway on her first night. Now she is cozy and snug in the garage. Chip chopped the branches early this morning.

My awesome dashboard! You can control everything from the steering wheel!

A (sideways) view of the console. Navigation, Pandora, XM radio all voice activated. All way cooler than I could have imagined! And two side air control! That's right, I don't have to freeze anymore when I ride in the car with Chip! The back also has it's own temp controls.

And speaking of cool.....it has a refrigerator!

That third seat in the middle row was a big selling point making this minivan able to fit 8 people comfortable.

Remote opening middle doors....another awesome feature, especially when I have three babies! Okay, two babies and a toddler.

Pop enjoyed some Elijah time after our busy day.

I snapped a photo of Elijah under the desk and my mom said it reminded her of this photo of JFK & Jr.
