Rory the First Ten Days

9

What a crazy couple of weeks it has been. We just have one baby home and are desperately missing our Patrick still in the NICU at Texas Childrens. And as we sit at home and miss sweet Patrick, we have continued to fall more in love with both boys and Rory has had his first few days at home and we are getting to know how blessed we are by this sweet baby boy.

Rory, just like his big brother, is, so far, a really “easy” baby. He LOVES to nurse and tends to cluster feed, nursing about every hour for several hours then taking breaks. Elijah did the same and Patrick is giving clues in his NICU eating that is how he will be once home. My kids just like to cluster feed. I know some people prefer to get babies on schedules cause it can be easier but I am of the school of thought that it is healthy and less stressful for everyone to feed on demand. That works great for our family, especially be I co sleep with my babies. Rory is quite satisfied most nights to nurse laying down with me and so neither of us really has to wake up much, allowing for both of us to sleep pretty well. (Though this Mama is still catching up on sleep from the first week post partum in the hospital and hotel and a very tired pregnancy).

Rory rarely cries and loves to look around at his world. He is so alert and has been since birth. He has held his head up since the first couple of days of life and continues to get stronger. We have not decided who he favors. With Elijah it was easy to see that he looked like Chip but Rory is a bit of a mystery so far. We have identified the origin of some features. He has my ears, his Daddy’s feet and his Granny’s nose. He also has a distinguished McDonald family feature involving is second and third toe and he is a cleft in his chin like his namesake, my grandfather. That is a trait that all three of my boys seem to have which I think is really cool.

Elijah seems to love big brotherhood and is really good at it. I have not seen any jealousy in him, only adoration for his little brother. He holds his hand, gives him kisses and is always asking about Rory. He sweet little voice just sings out Rory’s name when he is looking for him or telling him “Hi Rory”.

We are loving every moment with this precious little boy as we count the days (as much as you can with something so uncertain) until Patrick comes home and these sweetheart babies are reunited!
