St Patrick’s Day 2015

19

We like to recognize St. Patrick’s Day at our house. After all, the littlest Parish was named after St. Patrick!  This holiday has always been fun for my family growing up. I remember my mom making green eggs, and my dad wearing one of his many Irish ties. I grew up with Claddagh gifts from my parents, cool gifts (like a piece of the blarney stone) from my grandparents and lots and lots of green year around. So St. Patrick’s day was always fun for us and I am happy and excited to pass on this love of the holiday and the Celtic culture in general to my children. Plus, it is an adorable excuse for a photo shoot and festive outfits!

Getting ready for our photo shoot, Rory was giggly on the couch and I had to capture the moment.

Patrick is 13 Months Old

28

My sweet little Pfunk is 13 months old. Yup. My tiny toddler (it aches to say toddler) is taking in his world and learning and growing more and more every day! Patrick is still nursing strong, just like his brother about 6 times a day. He nurses for comfort too but not as much as his twin. Mostly he wants to nurse when he is hungry. Occasionally Patrick will get a bottle of pumped milk if tandem nursing is not working (due to “food fights”) or their cluster feeding has “drained” my supply. But mostly, this little guy loves to nurse. He did appear to jump into the “solids” experience enthusiastically at first but has slowed down a bit. He is a VERY MESSY eater. As neat as Rory is Patrick is messy. So although he thoroughly enjoys the food experience, He does not ingest nearly as much as he gets on his bib, his seat….THE FLOOR. Wrigley is a very happy dog with all the “floor d’oeuvres”. Although Patrick prefers to nurse above all else, he does have some favorites in the solids department. He loves fruits and veggies! String beans (in their whole form because we do babylead weaning) is his favorite. He also loves peas and bananas. Nursing Patrick is relaxing and peaceful. He is a very quiet and gentle nursling and I can definitely notice the oxytocin hormone pumping through when we have our nursing session. I get so relaxed and sleepy.  Patrick loves to play with and inspect my specialty nursing necklaces while he eats but that is the extent of his activity while breastfeeding. That is unless Rory tries to get in on some of the action at the same time. Sometimes tandem nursing is the perfect solution to two hungry or tired twins and sometimes it is a recipe for disaster with them either both wanting the same side or simply wanting me all to themselves.  Every day is different. Every day is a new adventure. And I am happy and excited to see how my nursing relationship with each of them and them as a pair revolved. I’d really like to do another nursing photo shoot soon so I can capture this special season of our journey.

My tiny Patrick, as of this morning, is 16 pound 4 ounces. Not a whole lot of change this month but with all the sickness going on this month and the transition to being a solid food/nursing baby I did not expect a big leap. In the past month, there has only been a couple of sick free days in our home. Someone has been sick pretty much the whole time. For Patrick’s part, he has had a fever three times on three separate days. Everyone else has had fevers for days on end, vomiting and all the undesirables side effects of flu and stomach flu. Patrick has the immune system of a freight train. He gets a fever for a day with no other symptoms and then is fine…or he does not get sick at all. I am in awe of his immunities! This tiny boy is STRONG! But we knew that from the very beginning. So strong. So brave.

Patrick is still working on his independent walking.  He can take about 10 steps on his own. He practices this the most in the evenings when his brothers have gone to bed. Patrick is usually the last Parish Little awake. Since he normally naps for a total of 4-5 hours every day (sometimes consecutively!) I let him stay up a little bit later sometimes.  This is when I get the best one on one time with him. Our favorite thing to do in this time is practice walking. He is SO DETERMINED! He pushes himself up on my knees as I sit in front of him and balances as he slowly lets go with is hands over his hand and big smile on his face. Then he lowers his hands and starts to walk. Sometimes its 4 steps. Sometimes 10. Then he will do it all over again, always with a big sparkling smile. He loves vocal play and will imitate sounds and words. He has definitely found his voice and has started using it to shriek in protest if wants or needs something and we don’t notice for some reason. Hey, with 3 under 3 it is bound to happen on occasion.

Patrick loves to explore and his big brother’s playroom is a favorite spot, also because that is where Wrigley can often be found. This guy loves his Wrigley and really all animals. His favorite toys are soft and furry and he loves to cuddle. I am so blessed to have such cuddly boys, all three!

Patrick brings such a unique element to our family of five and every day he reminds me to slow down and enjoy these precious moments with my sweet three. I know we will all learn a lot from this old soul, deep thinker..precious little boy.

Rory is 13 Months Old!

2

My sweet Rory is 13 months old. I know most Mama’s just do the monthly updates for the first year but I feel like there is so much change in the first two years that I want to document as much as possible. And this last month has been quite a crazy month for Rory and the rest of the family.

Rory is still rocking it as a nursling. He was hesitant about starting solids at the beginning but starting to pick up the pace after a week or two. Well then the eczema hit and we scaled back solids and mostly nursed until it cleared up. And now he is back to loving solids, though we are introducing them slowly and still loves to nurse and does this about 6 times a day for nutrition and probably an equal amount of times for comfort. This little guy just loves to be close to his mama. Nursing Rory as a “toddler” (though to me he still seems like a baby at just 13 months) is full of action and character. There is a lot of hair/face grabbing. He isn’t trying to hurt me but I have to admit, it does not feel great so I have started to wear my hair up as much as possible. Rory has become an extremely active nursling, especially when he is nursing for comfort/closeness. Still, I love nursing my babies and I am excited to be a month into the second year of my nursing journey with the twins and no where near stopping.  As far as solids go, Rory is the neatest 13 month old eater I have ever seen. And although I use a bib every time, he really does not need it. I find very little of his solids anywhere but in his mouth. I was shocked to discover Rory is the neater eater of the twins (by A LONG SHOT!). He loves carbs and meat though as I said we are slowing introducing foods some of his favorites so far is gluten free pasta, chicken, beef, diced potatoes,  organic gluten free happy baby puffs and they teething wafers by the brand Plum. He would eat a whole box of those if I let him. And though I prefer to limit the processed food for my kiddos in favor of homemade and whole foods, I am grateful to have these easy go to options while we are continuing to expand Rory’s dietary choices. We are doing babyled weaning with both babies, meaning they eat what we eat (though with Rory this is adjusted a bit) and as of now, they will wean when THEY are ready. If we are led to change that at some point I am open to that but right now I am just enjoying this journey of food and nursing together. Toddler nursing is new territory to me as Elijah weaned at 11 1/2 months (though he continued to get my previously pumped milk until 16 months).

As of this morning, Rory is tipping the scales at 17 pounds 2 ounces having gained back the pound he lost the week before last when he had the stomach flu. Still a little guy (though not as little is his twin) he is healthy, cheerful, vibrant and active so we are not in the least concerned about size. Rory still likes to walk next to me holding one hand and will take a couple of steps on his own. He loves to play with his big brother and when Elijah is near, Rory is all smiles. Elijah notices too and declared “Rory likes me!”.

Rory has FINALLY started sleeping through the night! Praise God! Hallelujah! He will occasionally wake up and “chat with attitude” but then goes right back to sleep if I stay very still (as I still sleep in the nursery) and quiet. He will sleep about 11-12 hours. Napping is still a challenge and there are days when I try and try but he just won’t settle to sleep and there are days when something just clicks and he takes two perfect 90 minute naps. I have read all the gentle parenting sleep books, looked at the articles and even let him fuss a bit but there seems to be no rhyme or reason to a successful nap day versus a less successful nap day. One thing I know for sure is that this time with him so little is such a short season and while some days are exhausting, no nap means I get more time with  my Rory and I especially enjoy getting that precious one on one time with him on the days when napping is not in the cards. I strive to give each of my children as much one on one time as possible and so I make the most of this precious time with my boy.

He is such a joy, a true delight, to be around. He still has the BIG EMOTIONS that we identified when he was a wee baby but with those big emotions comes big smiles, big laughs, big hugs and big joy. He loves his baths and splashing around in the water with his brothers is one of his favorite things to do and surefire way to make him smile on harder days. I can’t wait to find the perfect baby pool for our boys to splash in this summer! I know Rory will be a happy boy as long as he is in the water.

A true product of attachment parenting, Rory continues to LOVE to be worn though lately when he go to the store, he seems to like it best riding beside his big brother in the cart. He is still quite happy riding on my back as I cook dinner, go on family walks or just go about my daily duties around the home. And I love having him with me. His smile and laughter and general silliness fills my day with sunshine. He is so precious and so loving and lovable. God definitely knew what he was doing when he placed this boy in our family.
